The Green Kitchen Project environmentally friendly design is a continuum that’s shaded from Light Green to Dark Green. Light Green kitchens are designed to be considerably better for the environment than ‘normal’ kitchens. Medium and Dark Green kitchens take it to the next level embracing materials and techniques that have been designed solely with the environment in mind.
Whether we go with a Light, Medium or Dark Green your kitchen will be a healthier place to spend your time.
Light Green
- We typically employ less wood or use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) wood when possible.
- The cabinets and hardware are super durable
- We use paints and stains with low VOC (volatile organic compounds). VOC’s are chemicals with a carbon-hydrogen component and cause indoor pollution
- We replace incandescent cabinet lighting with L.E.D. lights.
- We select energy efficient appliances
- We use materials which are extracted, processed and manufactured regionally (within 500 miles of your house).
Medium Green
- We employ everything in Light Green designs plus…
- We use all renewable materials.
- Kitchens are typically less spacious but every bit as functional as any kitchen in the world.
- We use all formaldehyde free paints, stains, plywood, MDF and particleboard.
- The surfaces can always be refinished (as opposed to being thrown away) when they get worn down.
- We use re-cycled and re-engineered woods. We also use green guard laminates.
Dark Green
- In addition to everything in the Light and Medium Green sections…
- We simplify and usually downsize your kitchen.
- We reuse existing parts of the cabinets or incorporate vintage storage pieces in the kitchen.
- We use all Energy Star appliances and place a compost bin and a recycling bin seamlessly into the design.
- All the materials for the countertops, sink, etc. are made from recycled, reused or salvaged materials.
- The Dark Green kitchen is the best starting point for making your entire home green.
Lastly, make good “green choices” for the food you eat and the air you breathe!
